The previews to "The American" had me very excited to see the movie. Not to mention I am a George Clooney fan (from way back in the "ER" days). So with that said, I found a sitter, ventured to the new theater in my area and used my Regal free movie ticket to get in.
One thing I have to tell you about me (yeah its kinda relevant to this movie), I am what you would call a "preview watcher". It is common practice for me to get to the movies about 30 minutes early so I can catch ALL the previews. For me it is better to watch the trailer on the big screen as opposed to on my laptop. I should have known by the previews what to expect from this movie. It was the first time in a long time that I sat in the theater and was not excited about any of the "coming soon" messages.
"The American" starts with a cozy fireside chat between to lovers that decide to take a walk on the frozen lake. Now me, I am expecting for the lake to give way, but nope shooting starts and you are on the edge of your seat. You see George showing off his bad ass secret agent skills and you're all in.
Skip to Italy where the rest of the movie takes place and not only have you decided to recline in the new, stadium seats, but you can barely keep your eyes open. You watch a paranoid, aged Clooney wandering around small Italian towns constantly under the assumption that someone is either following him or trying to kill him. Suspicions go from a local Priest to the local prostitute and the movie drags for about an hour.
It took me a while to figure out exactly what his profession in the movie was actually supposed to be. For some reason, it was hard for me to swallow that the part was that of an assassin. I would have better guessed gun-maker, or arms dealer of some sort but assassin just did not come across in the film.
Just as I am about to fall asleep, having been soothed by the snores of the person sitting behind me something good happens........
more action, shooting, car chases all the good stuff......... and then.........Just like that.......
the movie is over and you are left wondering "what the hell was this all about". Its not that good kinda feeling you had when you walked out of "Inception". You know that feeling of damn Leo, this is crazy, did all that really just happen?
No, that's not the feeling you get... People left grumbling about the torture they just endured and how the hell we got stuck with such a crap ending. The sleeping man behind me was grateful for the nap and everyone else was moaning about how they should have seen "The Expendables".
I can say that we should not expect a sequel to this movie and that is definitely a good thing. It was nice to watch George for close to two hours, but soulae has to give this one 1 star. Wait for the DVD or dare I say it *looking over shoulders for secret agents* just download it, save your money all together.
Next up for review........"The Town"
